We had the pleasure of building a Custom Built PC for a software developer who wanted to ensure he had an incredibly powerful rig, with the build heavily skewed towards CPU and RAM-intensive, professional work that required a whole lot of RAM, and a powerful processor. This build balances the impressive specs with affordability, and quiet running operation, thanks to a combination of top-tier components and an impressive water cooling system.
The internals consisted of an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D Processor, Its 16 cores (32 threads) and high clock speeds are exceptional for fast code compilation, running multiple Virtual Machines (VMs), Docker containers, and any heavy multi-threaded workloads like Machine Learning/AI development. The V-Cache is great for gaming, but the core count is the key for development.
Paired with 128GB DDR5 RAM giving plenty of headroom, perfect for running multiple demanding applications, a fleet of VMs/containers, or working with large datasets. 32GB to 64GB is typically what you’d find in most workstations, so 128GB is also more future-proof and excellent for very heavy workloads.
Next on the agenda was storage, a super fast 2TB NVMe SSD + an additional 2x 4TB HDDs in RAID-1 for data redundancy. This allows for super quick boot times, lightning fast application start-ups, yet plenty of archival storage for those important projects, with the safety of knowing that 4TB of storage is being mirrored 1:1, in case of any drive failure.
Combined with a high quality Gigabyte Motherboard and Power Supply (750W 80+ Gold certified), the system also has room for expandability in the future, if down the line a more grunty GPU is required, or additional hardware. The Power Supply also has plenty of wiggle-room so it’s not being stressed out, even when the processor is loaded up to full capacity, thereby increasing longevity.
The Corsair NAUTILUS 360 Liquid CPU Cooler is a High-end cooling system, critical for a high-core-count CPU like the 7950X3D, with this setup, the processor has the best chance in maintaining peak performance during intensive workflows.
