If so, you know how frustrating and stressful it can be to try to recover your data. That's why it's essential to backup your files from your Desktop PC or Laptop regularly, so you always have a copy in case something goes wrong. In this article, we'll go over some tips and tools for backing up your data, so you can have peace of mind and avoid any potential disasters. Why Backing Up Your Data is Important There are many reasons why you should back up your data regularly. Here are just a few: Accidents happen: Even if you're careful with your files, accidents can still occur. You might accidentally delete something, or your computer might crash due to a power outage or other issue. Hardware failure: Hard drives can fail over time, and if that happens, you could lose all your data. Malware and viruses: If your computer becomes infected with malware or a virus, your files could become corrupted or even deleted. Theft: If your computer or other device is stolen, you could lose all your data unless you have a backup. With these risks in mind, it's clear that backing up your data is essential for anyone who wants to protect their files and avoid any potential disasters. How to Back Up Your Data Now that you know why backing up your data is important let's go over some tips and tools for doing so. Use Cloud Storage One of the easiest and most convenient ways to back up your data is to use cloud storage. Services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive allow you to store your files online, so you can access them from anywhere and easily share them with others. Plus, if your computer crashes or is stolen, you'll still have a copy of your files in the cloud. Use an External Hard Drive Another option for backing up your data is to use an external hard drive. You can connect the drive to your computer and use it to store your files, then disconnect it when you're done. This method is great for people who want to keep their files close at hand and don't want to rely on the cloud. Use Backup Software If you want to automate the backup process, you can use backup software like Acronis True Image or Carbonite. These programs will automatically back up your files to the cloud or an external hard drive, so you don't have to worry about doing it manually. Schedule Regular Backups No matter what method you choose, it's important to schedule regular backups to ensure that you always have a recent copy of your files. Whether you choose to back up your data daily, weekly, or monthly, make sure you stick to a schedule and don't forget to do it. Backing up your data is essential for anyone who wants to protect their files and avoid any potential disasters. Whether you choose to use cloud storage, an external hard drive, backup software, or a combination of methods, make sure you schedule regular backups and don't forget to do it. By taking these steps, you can have peace of mind knowing that your data is safe and secure, no matter what happens. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: backup, cloud storage, data files, desktop computer, external hard drive, hard drive, tech tips #### Benefits of buying a Refurbished Laptop or Desktop Computer. If you’re looking for a great quality, cheap laptop or a powerful desktop workstation that won’t break the bank, you should highly consider purchasing a refurbished, business grade notebook or desktop PC. These machines come from industry leading brands such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba and are a cut above your standard home-consumer type models. The reasoning behind them being so much better is simple, they are designed to last longer, and cope with the stresses of daily use in office environments. Business professionals simply cannot have any downtime as this would seriously harm their productivity and bottom line. Most of these models also feature enterprise grade technologies and many have extra features built in like backlit keyboards, fingerprint readers and more, which typically only come on much higher end units. Business grade machines from the likes of the Dell, Lenovo, and HP typically also would have cost much more when new, compared to a home consumer model as they have much better construction and are more robust, for example see this snippet from Wikipedia… Dell Latitude computers are also built to Dell's RoadReady specification which includes a durable magnesium-alloy casing, internal metal frames and Strike Zone shock protection in case the computer is dropped or suffers a severe impact. Many models also feature free-fall sensors or solid-state drives. Latitude models are also considered more durable and higher quality than the Inspiron line, and even above the premium Studio and XPS models. https://en.wikipedia.org/ Being that these models are highly popular and extremely well built, there is also more chance of future upgrades and parts being more readily available for any repairs. Many companies tend to update their machines on a 3-5 year cycle, as the majority of these corporate level businesses have their IT equipment on a leasing structure. This means these machines while still in brilliant condition, are no longer required. This is where we come in, we source these machines and select the best of the bunch, fully test them, service them inside and out, then upgrade them where necessary to meet the needs of today. Once these machines are ready for sale, you’re generally looking at a sub-$600 machine which is in fantastic condition, and sure to beat even most new models at the same price point. For example check out this comparison of a laptop below… hungryPC RefurbishedDell LatitudeE6420 LaptopBRAND NEWAcer Aspire ES1-531-C9V1 LaptopIntel Core i5 2520MIntel Celeron N3050 Processor4GB DDR3 RAM4GB DDR3 RAMPrice: $345.81Price: $583.00 (on special at major retailer) *comparison was made 28/03/2016 with a current “mid range” refurbished laptop and a major retailers current “mid range” offering. To most people the above models would sound very similar, both have 4GB RAM, both have an Intel Processor, but the one very important key factor here is what TYPE of processor, the Intel Celeron / Pentium Dual Core and other low-end offerings like some of the AMD Dual Core processors used in most of these sub-$600 laptops are not even close to the speed, performance and feature set of the much higher-end processors like the Core i5 series. Using the CPUBoss website we can easily find benchmark results for these two particular processors going head to head, you can see the benchmark comparison below showing real world test results using various tests from the likes of GeekBench and PassMark, PassMark for example has been around since 1998 and is a leading authority in software and hardware performance benchmarking and testing. As an additional comparison (shown below), we can see very similar results from the UserBenchmark website, this particular site lets visitors test and upload results from their own machines that use these processors, which then allows us to compare the two side by side in another real world example. See the full comparison here We have also ran our own in house testing with leading benchmarking software and found the same results as shown from these particular websites. The difference was obvious right from turning on the laptop to simply browsing the internet, while the higher end refurbished unit had already finished installing the benchmarking tools, the brand new laptop at a similar price point, was still slowly going through installing the software. Simply put, side by side, a refurbished business grade machine that we sell would beat this BRAND NEW laptop hands-down in speed and usability. Based on our own personal experiences with these high end business grade laptops, they usually even outlast brand new home-consumer type models thanks to high quality construction, better quality parts and better all-round build quality. What condition are your Refurbished PC's and Laptops? Every laptop we stock has been restored, tested and renewed to A Grade quality before they are offered for sale (unless otherwise stated). Any faults or major cosmetic damages are listed and specifically noted on each product description where necessary, and are sold at a discounted rate as a B GRADE option. Not all refurbished tech is the same, experience our difference and see how we grade our systems here What is HPC Certified Refurbished To ensure your system arrives in excellent working order, our technicians meticulously test and service each individual machine before shipment to ensure they meet our high standards. Built around our PIXEL Gaming PC configuration with a few customizations, we were able to supply them a fantastic rig for all their favourite games that fits in a tiny 370mm x 186mm x 295mm case, without sacrificing performance. The internals consisted of an Intel Core i5 12400F 12th Gen processor with 6 Cores and 12 Threads up to 4.40GHz Turbo, a popular mainstream desktop processor, highly regarded for offering excellent price-to-performance, especially for gaming and general use. Its strong single-core performance is a major benefit for most current games. Paired with 32GB DDR4 RAM giving plenty of headroom, perfect for running multiple demanding applications, a whole bunch of browser tabs, and ensuring future-proofing for next generation games that require more and more resources. To balance performance and cost, our customer opted for an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6GB, a great value entry-level desktop graphics card suitable for budget gaming builds where low power consumption is a priority, therefore also lowering heat and ensuring stability in such a small chassis. For the titles they want to play, this card offers fantastic framerates at 1080p and keeps the system cool and quiet. Combined with a high quality ASUS Prime B660M Motherboard and 750W 80+ GOLD Rated Power Supply, the system also has room for expandability making it easy to upgrade to a more powerful graphics card in the future if it's ever required. The Power Supply also has plenty of wiggle-room so it's not being stressed out, even when the system is loaded up to full capacity, thereby increasing longevity. When you’re looking for a brand new, custom built PC that is designed for peak performance and value, it’s important to consider reliability and longevity. Our systems are designed with sustainability in mind, and go through a rigorous QA procedure to ensure they’re right from day one. With high quality packaging to ensure your new baby arrives safely, and free shipping anywhere in NZ. This build balances the impressive specs with affordability, and quiet running operation, thanks to a combination of top-tier components and an impressive water cooling system. The internals consisted of an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D Processor, Its 16 cores (32 threads) and high clock speeds are exceptional for fast code compilation, running multiple Virtual Machines (VMs), Docker containers, and any heavy multi-threaded workloads like Machine Learning/AI development. The V-Cache is great for gaming, but the core count is the key for development. Paired with 128GB DDR5 RAM giving plenty of headroom, perfect for running multiple demanding applications, a fleet of VMs/containers, or working with large datasets. 32GB to 64GB is typically what you'd find in most workstations, so 128GB is also more future-proof and excellent for very heavy workloads. Next on the agenda was storage, a super fast 2TB NVMe SSD + an additional 2x 4TB HDDs in RAID-1 for data redundancy. This allows for super quick boot times, lightning fast application start-ups, yet plenty of archival storage for those important projects, with the safety of knowing that 4TB of storage is being mirrored 1:1, in case of any drive failure. Combined with a high quality Gigabyte Motherboard and Power Supply (750W 80+ Gold certified), the system also has room for expandability in the future, if down the line a more grunty GPU is required, or additional hardware. The Power Supply also has plenty of wiggle-room so it's not being stressed out, even when the processor is loaded up to full capacity, thereby increasing longevity. The Corsair NAUTILUS 360 Liquid CPU Cooler is a High-end cooling system, critical for a high-core-count CPU like the 7950X3D, with this setup, the processor has the best chance in maintaining peak performance during intensive workflows. When you’re looking for a brand new, custom built PC that is designed for peak performance and value, it’s important to consider reliability and longevity. Our systems are designed with sustainability in mind, and go through a rigorous QA procedure to ensure they’re right from day one. It can be a bit unsettling when your desktop computer won't power on, but don't fret! More often than not, it's a straightforward issue you can easily resolve yourself. We usually find that most startup issues are quickly fixed with a few easy troubleshooting steps. This guide is designed to help you get your desktop back up and running smoothly. Has Anything Changed Recently? Before we dive into troubleshooting steps, take a moment to consider if anything new has been installed or changed on your Desktop PC before the issue began. A recent software update, a new peripheral, or even a power fluctuation can sometimes cause a temporary glitch. Often, a complete power reset is all it takes to clear things up and get your system booting normally again. First Step: Power Drain, Restart. This is often the most effective solution for a PC that's being a bit stubborn. It helps to completely reset the system and clear any lingering glitches. Keep note of any flashing lights, fan noises, or messages on the screen that may help troubleshoot your issue further. Here's how to do it: Disconnect Everything: Turn off your computer and unplug every single cable from the back and front of your PC. This includes the main power cable, monitor cables, keyboard, mouse, speakers, any USB devices (like external hard drives or webcams), and network cables. Press and Hold the Power Button for 60 seconds: With everything disconnected, press and hold your desktop's power button for a full 60 seconds. This drains any residual power from the internal components, ensuring a complete reset. Release and Wait: Release the power button and wait for about 5 minutes. This allows all internal capacitors to fully discharge. Reconnect Essentials Only: Now, plug in only the absolute essentials and see if you can start your PC. We recommend only connecting the following initially. The main power cable for your PC. Your monitor cable(s). Your keyboard and mouse. Attempt to Start: Press the power button normally to turn on your desktop, and wait, paying close attention to any activity, lights, noises or messages. Patience is a Virtue, Especially After Updates! A crucial tip to remember: When your PC is starting up, especially after a recent update or sudden shutdown, it's perfectly normal for the machine to turn on and off repeatedly while it completes its processes. Never interrupt this process! Give your PC a good few minutes to complete its procedures before attempting to press the power button again. This ensures that all updates are installed correctly and your system is stable. Check Your Power and Connections Often, a PC that won't turn on is simply suffering from a loose connection, or may be connected to a monitor that is not showing the display. Let's make sure everything is connected properly and run a process of elimination to determine the cause. Try a Different Power Socket: Plug your PC's power cable into a different wall socket in your home or office. This helps rule out an issue with the power point itself. Inspect the Power Cable: Ensure that the power cable going into the back of your PC (and into the wall) is firmly seated. Sometimes, a loose connection here is all it takes. Power Supply Switch: Most desktop power supplies have a physical on/off switch on the back, usually marked with a "0" and "1" or "O" and "I". Make sure this switch is set to the "on" or "I" position. If you see a recessed selector switch (often coloured red) that has 110/240 Voltages on it DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE THIS. Listen for Sounds: When you press the power button, listen carefully. Do you hear the fans spin up? Do you hear any beeps? Do you hear your Operating System's Startup Sounds? Even if the screen is black, hearing the computer come to life internally is a good sign that the power supply and motherboard are receiving power, and potentially you're just dealing with the issue of your screen not showing the display. Is the PC On, But the Screen is Black? Sometimes, your desktop PC might actually be powered on and running, but you can't see anything on the monitor. This is a very common scenario! Check Monitor Power and Input: Ensure your monitor is plugged into a working power outlet and is turned on. Check the monitor's input settings: These are usually accessible via buttons on the monitor itself, make sure it's set to the correct input that your PC is connected to (e.g HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA) . Graphics Card Connection: This is especially important for gaming PCs or CAD workstations with dedicated graphics cards. Ensure your monitor cable is plugged into the graphics card ports on the back of your PC, not the ports directly on the motherboard (which are often higher up or arranged differently). Plugging into the motherboard ports when a dedicated graphics card is installed will usually result in a black screen. Try Different Monitor Ports: If your graphics card has multiple ports (e.g several HDMI or DisplayPort connections), try plugging your monitor into a different port on the graphics card. Try Another Monitor/Cable: If you have access to another monitor, TV and/or another cable, try swapping them out. This helps determine if the issue is with your original monitor or cable. Key Takeaways to Get Your PC Up and Running Full Power Drain: Unplug everything, hold the power button for 60 seconds, wait 5 minutes, then reconnect only the essentials. Check Power, Switches and Connections: Ensure all cables are firmly connected and the PSU switch is on. Listen for Signs of Life: Fans, beeps, startup sounds, these all tell you what the PC is doing. Check Your Monitor, and try another Display: Is it switched on? Is it on the right input? Is it plugged into the graphics card? Try a TV or another Display just in case! Be Patient: Let your PC complete its startup cycles, especially after updates or a sudden shutdown. We trust these steps have helped get your PC back up and running smoothly! If you've diligently followed all the troubleshooting steps outlined in this guide and your machine is still not turning on, your device may require further technical diagnostics by a technician. If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our friendly support team on our contact page and we can help get you up and running in no time. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: computer wont turn on, how to, warranty guide #### Eco Bags - One more step closer, to a sustainable environment Gotta love when our courier company steps up to the plate with a high quality sustainable alternative to plastic waste! We've been trying to find an alternative for a long time now, and what do you know, the awesome team at GoSweetSpot released these! These bags are fully compostable, meaning they don't need oxygen to break down, even in a landfill situation. Additionally, they’re not plastic (they’re made from corn starch) so they won't pose a threat to wildlife either. The new eco-bags will be starting to ship out for most Computer Part orders as soon as our old plastic bags run out! We're all about recycling and we use recycled packaging wherever possible, and this is just one more step in the right direction to a sustainable environment! Great stuff!! A bunch of information is available at their website, but some of the key points we have included below. If not plastic, what are the bags made from? Our bags are derived from biopolymers and co-polymer; PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate), Corn-starch and PLA (polylactic acid). None of our products contain any conventional plastic whatsoever. To assure that we are producing the highest quality products available, we use the highest-grade blend of the three materials. This results in our bags not only decomposing in compost faster than other compostable products on the market, but, creating a stronger bag that won’t snap under weight pressures or rip with sharp corners. How does their strength compare with conventional plastic bags? Because of the quality of our bags, instead of snapping under extreme weight pressure, they will simply stretch slightly, distributing the pressure over the length of the entire bag. When home tested, we found that plastic bags will give way at the bottom causing the contents to break through the bottom of the bag. Holding the same weight and shaking the bag up and down, our bags simply stretched at the handle but do not break at the bottom. - Categories: Website Updates & News - Tags: biodegradable, compostable, courier bags, environment, plastic, plastic waste, sustainable #### Embrace Sustainability and Savings: The Environmental Benefits of Refurbished Computers and Laptops In today's world, where technology has become an integral part of our lives, it's essential to consider the environmental impact of our choices. One powerful way to contribute to a sustainable planet while also saving money is by purchasing refurbished computers and laptops. Extended Product Lifespan: Refurbished computers are carefully inspected, repaired, and upgraded to ensure optimal performance. By giving these devices a second life, you contribute to extending their lifespan. In doing so, you reduce the demand for new products, ultimately decreasing the environmental impact associated with their manufacturing and disposal. Cost Savings: Aside from the environmental benefits, purchasing a refurbished computer or laptop can also save you a significant amount of money. Refurbished devices are typically available at a fraction of the cost of a brand new computer, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious individuals. You can invest the money saved in other eco-friendly initiatives or simply enjoy the financial benefits. Trustworthy Quality: One might assume that refurbished devices come with compromises in terms of quality and reliability. However, our refurbishment program ensures that these devices undergo rigorous testing and quality control measures. But the truth is, refurbished IT equipment offers great value for money and is a smart choice for anyone looking to save some cash and reduce their impact on the environment. One of the biggest advantages of buying refurbished IT equipment is the cost savings. Refurbished laptops and desktops are typically sold at a significant discount compared to brand new models, making them an attractive option for those on a budget. And because these devices have been restored to be in great working condition, they often offer the same, if not better performance and features as many brand new models, so you don't have to compromise on quality. In addition to the cost savings, buying refurbished IT equipment is also good for the environment. When electronic devices are no longer needed, they often end up in landfills, where they can leach toxic substances into the soil and water. By choosing to buy refurbished, you're helping to keep these devices out of landfills and reducing the demand for new, environmentally-harmful manufacturing processes. Another advantage of refurbished IT equipment is that even though it is used, it comes with a warranty, much like a brand new device. This means you can have peace of mind knowing that your refurbished laptop or desktop has been thoroughly tested and is backed by a warranty in case anything goes wrong. Overall, refurbished IT equipment offers great value for money and is a smart choice for anyone looking to save some cash and reduce their impact on the environment. So the next time you're in the market for a new laptop or desktop, consider giving our refurbished machines a try. You'll be glad you did. - Categories: Benefits of Buying Refurbished #### How to attach the Stand to Dell AIO or Monitor If you've just unboxed your Dell OptiPlex All in One PC and need help attaching the stand, this setup video below is for you! You press the power button, the screen lights up, and the login screen welcomes you, it's all set up and ready to go, waiting for you, sitting there with a screen calling you "Owner" or "Admin", did you know, it's super easy to personalize this to have your own real name (or even a nickname?) When IT professionals and refurbishers build or renew a computer, they often will set up a generic "Local Account" so the machine is ready for you to use right out of the box, without needing to perform complex setup procedures. This saves you a tonne of time when you unbox the computer, however you if you would like to personalize your device then a great step is to change the default username to one you'd prefer. Fortunately, changing your display name on the Windows 11 startup screen takes no time at all. Here is exactly how to do it, depending on how your account is set up. Method 1: Changing a Local Account (The "Owner" Fix) If your computer is brand new to you and isn't linked to your personal email address yet, you will likely be using a Local Account. By default these are often called "Owner", "Admin" or "User". Here is the absolute fastest way to change that name: Press the Windows Key on your keyboard (or click the Start button). Type Control Panel into the search bar and hit Enter. Under the User Accounts heading, click on Change account type. Click on the account named "Owner" (or whichever name you want to change). Click the Change the account name link on the left side of the menu. Type in your real name, click the Change Name button, and restart your computer! Pro-Tip: When your computer reboots, your new name will be proudly displayed right on the lock screen. Method 2: Changing a Microsoft Account Name If you have already logged into your computer using an @outlook.com or @hotmail.com email address, Windows 11 pulls your display name directly from the cloud. You cannot change this in the Control Panel; you have to change it online, this is part of your own personal Microsoft account and is nothing to do with the computer its self. These settings are often synced from your previous device/s Press the Windows Key, type Settings, and hit Enter. Click on Accounts on the left-hand side. Click on Your info. Scroll down to Related settings and click on Accounts (Manage my account). This will open your web browser. Log in to your Microsoft Account online. Under your profile picture at the top of the page, click Edit name. Update your first and last name, hit save, and restart your PC to sync the changes! Need More Tech Advice? One set is horizontally aligned and the other is vertically aligned. The reason for this is the majority of PC motherboards have connections to allow your Monitor to use the built-in, or otherwise known as Onboard graphics which are built into the Processor / CPU. When a graphics card is installed, typically to allow higher performance for Gaming, Photoshop, CAD software etc. It is therefore very important to plug your monitor directly into this card (if installed). Many graphics cards disable the onboard built-in ports, so incorrect connections could result in no picture on your monitor, or seriously reduced performance (since the Graphics Card only operates through its own ports). How do I connect my Monitor? To help you find the correct ports we have made a simple diagram below. Your port layout may differ from what is shown, but the general idea is to ensure your monitor plugs into the ports circled, which are separated from the main ports (USB, Ethernet, Sound etc) located on the Motherboard. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: graphics card, upgrade parts, where to plug graphics card #### How to Connect your PC to WiFi For the majority of our desktop computers, we include a free USB WiFi dongle/adapter similar to one of those pictured below. This is included in the box your machine was shipped in, generally taped to the bubblewrap packaging, please be careful not to throw it out, you will need this to connect to WiFi. Steps to connect to WiFi Plug in the USB WiFi dongle/adapter into a spare USB port, be careful not to damage the Antenna or bend it on any harsh angles. Find the Network Icon on the taskbar, near the bottom right-hand side, by the clock. The icon will appear differently depending on your connection status. You may have to click the Up arrow, if you cannot find the icon. See the pictures in this article as to what the icon looks like, it is often in the shape of WiFi signal bars, or a World Globe. Find your WiFi Network in the list of WiFi names, typically your Home WiFi will have the strongest signal showing (more lit up bars), as it is the closest. Type in your WiFi password, sometimes this will be written on a sticker on the back or bottom of your modem, it will be the same password you use for WiFi on other devices. Next, a message will show to ask if you want your device to be discoverable and find printers/shared files etc on your network, select Yes or No appropriately. You should now be online! Give it a few moments and try browse the internet. For Windows 11 users: The steps above are similar, however the icon to click and subsequent menu is slightly different, we recommend watching this video for further assistance on connecting to WiFi in Windows 11, How To Connect To Wi-Fi On Windows 11 - YouTube Please note: We are unable to guarantee the signal strength or capabilities of the free WiFi adapter we include. This is included as a gift to help most people get up and running on the internet successfully, we have tested these to work with the majority of ISP-provided modems from the likes of Spark, Vodafone etc. Due to the nature of WiFi connections and your particular setup, distance from the modem to PC, or even modem configuration, you may require a different brand or style of WiFi adapter or other configuration changes in your modem, in these cases, you may have to purchase a different WiFi adapter, or use an Ethernet cable to gain internet access. Channel Suggestions If you are having trouble using the WiFi dongle we provided, we suggest first trying to change the channel of your WiFi via your modem settings, you will need to get in contact with your internet provider or modem manufacturer for assistance in doing this. We find most USB WiFi Dongles accept channels 6, 7 and 9 as a starting point. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: connect internet, connect wireless, how to, wifi #### How to fix a Laptop that won't turn on. It can be frustrating when your laptop won't power on, but don't worry! More often than not, it's a simple fix that you can do right at home. We typically find that most start-up issues are easily resolved with a few quick troubleshooting steps. This guide is designed to help you get your laptop back in action without any fuss. Has Anything Changed Recently? Before we start, take a moment to consider if anything new has been installed or changed on your laptop lately. Sometimes, a recent software update or new peripheral can cause a temporary hiccup. But fear not, a good old-fashioned "power drain and reboot" often does the trick to clear any software glitches and get things running smoothly again. First Step: Power Drain, Restart. This is often the most effective solution for a laptop that's being a bit stubborn. It helps to completely reset the system and clear any lingering glitches. Keep note of any flashing lights, fan noises, or messages on the screen that may help troubleshoot your issue further. Here's how to do it: Disconnect Everything: First things first, unplug everything from your laptop. This includes the charger, any USB devices (like an external mouse, keyboard, or USB drive), or anything else connected. Sometimes, a conflicting or faulty peripheral can prevent your laptop from starting up. Press and Hold the Power Button for 30 seconds: With everything disconnected, press and hold your laptop's power button for a full 30 seconds. This might seem like a long time, but it's crucial for draining all residual power from the system and ensuring a complete reset. Release and Wait for 10 seconds: Release the power button and wait for about 10 seconds. Attempt to Start (Without Charger): Now, try pressing the power button normally to turn on your laptop. Do this without reconnecting the charger yet. Reconnect Charger (If Needed): If your laptop starts up, great! Once it has fully loaded to the desktop, you can reconnect your charger. If it doesn't start without the charger, repeat the Power Drain procedure one more time, but this time, try starting it up while the charger is connected for your second attempt. Patience is a Virtue, Especially After Updates! A crucial tip to remember: When your laptop is starting up, especially after a recent update, it's perfectly normal for the machine to turn on and off repeatedly while it completes its processes. Never interrupt this process! Give your laptop a good few minutes to complete its procedures before attempting to press the power button again. This ensures that all updates are installed correctly and your system is stable. Check Your Charger and Battery Often, a laptop that won't turn on is simply suffering from a flat battery. Let's make sure your charger is doing its job. Try a Different Power Socket: Plug your laptop charger into a different wall socket in your home or office. This helps rule out an issue with the power point you're using. Inspect the Charger Cables: Ensure that the mains power cable going into the charger brick itself (not the cable going into the laptop) is firmly plugged in. Sometimes, a loose connection here is all it takes. Try disconnecting and reconnecting this cable. Look for Indicator Lights: Most laptops have an indicator light that illuminates when they are charging. Pay close attention to this light when you plug in your charger. If you see the light come on, it's a good sign that your charger is producing power and sending it to your laptop. When you turn your laptop on, if you see flashing lights especially on the battery icon, or near the charging port that do not change if you connect the charger, this often indicates the charger is not powering the laptop, often replacing the charger will solve this issue. Is the Laptop On, But the Screen is Black? Sometimes, your laptop might actually be powered on, but you can't see anything on the screen. This can happen for a few reasons: External Monitor Connection: If you recently connected your laptop to an external monitor or TV, it might be trying to send the display signal there. Try pressing the Windows Key + P repeatedly to cycle through display modes (PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only). Screen Brightness: Your screen brightness might be turned down completely. Try pressing the brightness up keys (usually a key with a sun icon, you may also have to press the Fn key at the sane time.). External Display Check: If you have an external monitor available, try connecting your laptop to it. If the display appears on the external monitor, your laptop is likely working, and the issue might be with the laptop's built-in screen. Brand-Specific Tips If the general troubleshooting steps above haven't resolved the issue, here are some tips specific to certain laptop brands: For HP Laptops: BIOS RecoveryIf your HP laptop still isn't turning on, you might need to perform a BIOS recovery. This can often resolve startup issues. You can find detailed instructions on how to do this in HP Support's video: "Restore the BIOS on HP Computers with a Key Press Combination" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpiGUojtr3E]. For Lenovo Laptops: Battery DisconnectFor Lenovo laptops, a temporary battery disconnect can sometimes resolve power-on problems. Learn how to do this safely by watching the "Quick Fix for Lenovo Not Powering Up" video by Technologist on the Go [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQdYsoEBO1E]. Key Takeaways to Get Your Laptop Running Power Drain First: Disconnect everything, hold the power button for 30 seconds. Check Charger: Ensure it's plugged in correctly and showing an indicator light. Be Patient: Especially after updates, let your laptop complete its cycles. Check the Screen: Your laptop might be on, but the display is off or connected elsewhere. We trust these steps have helped get your laptop back up and running smoothly! If you've diligently followed all the troubleshooting steps outlined in this guide and your laptop is still not turning on, your laptop may require a replacement charger, battery or further technical diagnostics by a technician. If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our friendly support team on our contact page and we can help get you up and running in no time. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: how to fix laptop, laptop wont turn on, tech tips, warranty guide #### How to Reset your Windows 10 computer to Factory Settings Resetting your computer can be a helpful solution if you are experiencing major issues with it. However, it is important to understand that resetting your computer will erase all of the data on the hard drive, including any programs, drivers, and settings that you have installed. This means that you will need to reinstall these programs and drivers and set up your computer again after the reset. Therefore, it is not recommended to reset your computer unless you absolutely need to. If you are experiencing minor issues with your computer, there may be other troubleshooting steps that you can take before resorting to a reset. It is always a good idea to try these steps first before making the decision to reset your computer. However, if you do decide to reset your computer, the process is straightforward and can help to resolve many issues that you may be experiencing. In this blog post, we will walk you through the steps for resetting your Windows 10 computer. Step 1: Back up your important files Before resetting your computer, it is important to make sure that you have backed up any important files or documents that you don't want to lose. This is because resetting your computer will erase all of the data on the hard drive, including any files you have saved. You can back up your files by saving them to an external hard drive, cloud storage, or a USB flash drive. Step 2: Open the Start menu and click on "Settings" To reset your Windows 10 computer, you will need to access the "Settings" menu. To do this, click on the Start menu in the bottom left corner of your screen and then click on the "Settings" icon (it looks like a gear). Step 3: Click on "Update & Security" In the "Settings" menu, click on the "Update & Security" option. This will open a new menu with options related to updating and securing your computer. Step 4: Click on "Recovery" In the "Update & Security" menu, click on the "Recovery" option on the left side of the screen. This will open a menu with options for resetting your computer. Step 5: Click on "Get started" under "Reset this PC" In the "Recovery" menu, you will see an option called "Reset this PC." Click on the "Get started" button under this option. Step 6: Choose whether to keep or remove your files On the next screen, you will be asked whether you want to keep or remove your files. If you choose to keep your files, your personal files and settings will be preserved, but any apps you have installed will be removed. If you choose to remove your files, all data on your computer will be erased, including your personal files and settings. Choose the option that best meets your needs. Step 7: Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your computer Once you have chosen to keep or remove your files, the reset process will begin. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset. This process may take some time, so be patient. Step 8: Set up your computer After the reset process is complete, your computer will restart and you will need to set it up again. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your computer and restore any backed up files. That's it! You have now reset your Windows 10 computer. If you were experiencing problems with your computer before the reset, it should now be running smoothly. If you continue to experience issues, you may want to consider seeking the help of a technical support specialist. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: computer, factory settings, reinstall windows, reload windows, reset, windows 10 #### How to Securely Erase your Hard Drive Are you thinking of purchasing a new computer? or simply just going to sell/give away an old machine? You may want to read this! Most of us know before ever disposing of a computer, whether we are selling it, or simply getting rid of it for a new one we must format the hard drive to ensure nobody can get to our private data, banking details, pictures, emails etc. I am certain there is at least one piece of information on your computer that you do not want anyone to see, you may have deleted it in the past, but it can certainly still be lurking around in cache or temporary directories on your computer. So why not just format my hard drive or delete my personal data? The problem with this is that it would take anyone with any number of freely available “Un-delete” utilities like Piriform Recuva, all of about 5 minutes to look at anything you have deleted, even if you have formatted your drive. The reason for this is whenever you delete a file on your computer, it is never really deleted. What your computer does is removes the file information from your drive so as far as your operating system is concerned the file does not exist. What “Un-delete” file recovery software does is literally finds files that have had this information removed. Okay, but I want to totally get rid of my files! This is where we get to Securely Erasing your hard drive! What this does is usually one of two things, either the software writes zero’s (this is called “Zero’ing” a hard drive) all throughout the drive, or writes several passes of total random data to the drive. Writing several passes of random data is certainly the most preferred option if you have very sensitive information, as it makes it virtually impossible for any data to be even slightly recovered. There are several tools available to securely erase your hard drive, the weapon of choice for this article is a program called Active@ KillDisk created by LSoft Technologies’. We like this software because they do offer a totally free version that is perfectly suited to most people’s needs. You may want to purchase the full-version if you have extremely sensitive data on your machine, as the full version allows you to do more passes and has better more thorough erase options. You can download Active@ KillDisk from: https://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm After you have burnt the image and loaded it, (you may have to adjust your BIOS settings to allow booting from CD ROM drives!) you will be able to navigate to the free KillDisk option, this option will do one pass of zero’s to your hard drive. After this is done your computer will have absolutely nothing on it, so you may want to reinstall your operating system if you are selling the computer, otherwise you are free to dispose of your old hard drive without worrying about people getting a hold of your private information. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: drive, erase, hard drive, killdisk, secure, tips #### How to Select or Change Microphone Output in Windows 10 When you are trying to use Skype, Zoom, Facebook Messenger or other Video Calling programs, you may find your Microphone does not work straight away, often this is an easy fix as all that is required is a little configuration to tell your computer, which Microphone you are trying to use when making your calls. The Microphone you need to choose will vary depending on if you are using a Headset, Internal or External Webcam, or even an external based Sound Card. For most people using Laptops the Webcam will often have a built-in microphone that can be used if your meeting program supports it, first try setting it as the default communication device, it is easy to find which one by doing the following steps… An example listing of Microphones Right-click the sound icon on your taskbar (beside the clock) Open "Sound Settings" Make the window Fullscreen (click the square, beside the X in top right-hand corner of the window) Under Related Settings, click “Sound Control Panel” Click on the Recording Tab Make a loud noise such as clapping, talking loudly, etc. You should see one of the microphone’s green bar react, usually the one that reacts the most is the one you want to choose *this may not always find the right one, but is a good starting point* Right-click the Microphone you want to use as per the test above, and tick both “Set as Default Device” and “Set as Default Communication Device” (you may have to right-click on it again to complete the second tick) Restart your Computer These steps will tell the Windows 10 Operating System which microphone to prefer. If several are listed, you may have to try the above steps on each of them until you find the correct one for your purpose. Please be aware that any program like Zoom or Skype may require its own settings being changed to match this device selection also, but this generally will work for 90% of cases without any further things needed.   - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: facebook messenger, setup microphone, skype calls, webcam meeting, zoom calls #### How to Stop Fake Virus Pop-ups and Notifications in Chrome Seeing a sudden "Your PC is infected" warning pop up on your screen is terrifying. You might instantly think you need to throw the whole machine away or pay for expensive repairs. Nine times out of ten, you do not actually have a virus, and you certainly don't need to pay an expensive technician for a fix. You probably just accidentally clicked "Allow" on a website asking to send you notifications. Those scam websites then spam your screen with fake alerts hoping you will panic, click them, and buy fake security or clean-up / driver update software. Fixing this is incredibly simple and takes less than two minutes. This is an extremely common issue that people face, and you do not need to be a tech expert to solve it. Here is the step-by-step guide to silencing those annoying alerts and getting your browser back to normal. How to Block Fake Virus Notifications in Google Chrome The easiest way to fix the problem is to revoke the shady website's permission to send you messages. Open Google Chrome on your computer. Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the browser window. Click on Settings from the drop-down menu. Select Privacy and security from the left-hand menu. Click on Site settings and then scroll down to click on Notifications. Scroll down to the "Allowed to send notifications" section. Look for any suspicious website addresses you do not recognize. Click the three vertical dots next to the bad website and select Remove. Remove Unwanted Chrome Extensions If the pop-ups keep happening after you clear your notifications, a rogue browser extension might be the culprit. Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of Chrome. Hover over Extensions and click Manage Extensions. Look for anything you did not intentionally install. Click Remove on any suspicious extensions. Reset Chrome to Default Settings Sometimes a browser is too cluttered with junk to fix one piece at a time. If removing notifications and extensions does not stop the fake virus warnings, resetting Chrome completely is your best bet. This clears out temporary data, disables all extensions, and resets your homepage. Do not worry, your saved bookmarks and passwords will stay safe. Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of Chrome. Select Settings. Click on Reset settings in the left-hand menu. Click Restore settings to their original defaults. Confirm by clicking the Reset settings button. Is Your Current PC Struggling to Keep Up? Dealing with browser pop-ups is frustrating enough. It is even worse when those pop-ups completely freeze an older, slow computer. If your current machine struggles just to open web pages or manage everyday tasks, a simple hardware upgrade makes a world of difference, and gives you a fresh start. Often replacing your old computer with our affordable renewed options is much cheaper, and more effective than paying a technician hundreds of dollars to fix and upgrade a slow, out of date machine. In this article we will show you exactly how the Pro’s do it, so you can enjoy your upgraded RAM in confidence that it will work flawlessly. The first thing you need to do is check to see what type of RAM your laptop is capable of. I have found the best way of doing this is to visit the Kingston website and use their Memory Search tool ( located here ). After you locate your laptop via their manufacturer/model search you can see exactly which type of memory your laptop requires, and how much it is able to handle. Once you’ve purchased your RAM all you need are the following tools… Precision screwdriver set (mainly Phillips head is required, some laptops use Torx, be sure to check). Antistatic Wrist Strap. A copy of Memtest 86+ burnt to CD (freely available at https://www.memtest.org/ ). Clean tidy bench and some spare time. Locate exactly where your laptop’s RAM is installed. The easiest way to do this, is to flip your laptop over and look for a compartment with a memory symbol on it. It’s usually a smaller compartment than the rest, due to the laptop also usually having a compartment for the Hard Drive which is physically larger. On this particular laptop (Compaq Presario CQ62) you also need to remove the Battery before being able to remove the cover for the RAM compartment. Beware, some laptops have their memory under the keyboard, which will require you to remove a few screws from the back of the laptop, then gently lift the keyboard from the unit. After you have removed the screws from the compartment, you will have gained access to the RAM module/s. If you are only installing one more RAM module and you already have a spare slot, just pop the new one in with the next step. If replacing an existing module, remove the memory by undoing the clamps on either side of the memory and gently lift the module to a 45-degree angle while pulling it out of the slot. Take your new stick of RAM and simply align the small notch of the RAM module, with that of the memory slot. Gently insert the module at a 45-degree angle. Then, using medium pressure push the memory down towards the mainboard, until the clamps on either side of the module lock into place. After you have replaced the compartment cover on your laptop and tightened the screws we need to test the memory to ensure it is working properly. A lot of people are not aware of this step and just turn their computer on and use it, later wondering why it’s all of a sudden crashing or having strange stability issues. Due to how your system uses memory, every single thing you do on your computer has to be written to memory first, so if there is even one tiny error in the module, you can have a world of issues with your computer. To do this simply take your copy of Memtest86+ that you downloaded and burnt earlier, and set your machine’s BIOS to boot from the CD. You will be presented with a blue memory test screen like the one shown below. Once it has done at least 3-5 successful passes you can be sure your memory is in tip-top condition. Alternativley if you see a RED error then you need to either… Ensure you installed the memory module/s correctly. Ensure you have the right type of memory for your machine. Remove the old memory from your machine (as it may not be compatible with the new upgraded module you have installed). Troubleshoot Your Connection There are few things more annoying than when your internet goes down. Before you throw your modem out the window, take a deep breath! We've put together the ultimate internet troubleshooting checklist. These steps tend to resolve most common internet connection problems, getting you back online quickly and easily. Try a Different Device The first step is isolating the problem. Is your phone, tablet, or another laptop working? Make sure they're actually connected to the same WiFi network as the problematic device though, and be aware many phones will automatically use Mobile Data (even when WiFi is connected) if the connection is not sufficient. If it is only this one device, a simple reboot is usually all it takes! Turn your device off completely, wait one minute, and turn it back on. Someone Hogging Bandwidth? Check around your house and see if anyone is streaming video, downloading a huge file, update or gaming. High-demand activities can slow everyone down. Try asking others to pause their activity briefly to see if your connection speeds up. Sometimes it's best to turn the other devices off completely, in case there is a virus or background task using up all the bandwidth, without you knowing. Power Cycling Your Equipment This is the most crucial fix and should be done systematically. Just like your computer, your modem and router can get bogged down. A full restart clears their internal memory and forces a fresh connection with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Unplug Everything: Turn off and unplug the devices from your wall, including your router or modem, range extender/s, and the Fibre ONT unit (usually stuck to the wall). Wait: Crucially, wait a full 60 seconds to ensure all residual power is drained and the memory is completely cleared. Reconnect your Modem (or ONT unit first) and turn on: Wait until its lights are stable (usually solid green/white). This can take up to two minutes. Reconnect and turn on each subsequent device, one by one: Once your ONT has started then start the next device such as the router or modem, then any range extenders. Wait: Wait at least 5-10 minutes for all your devices to connect again and gain connectivity with your ISP, then try using the internet again. Check Lights and Connections If a restart didn't work, it's time for a physical inspection. Wiggle and Check Cables: Make sure all Ethernet cables (the chunky ones) are securely clicked into the correct ports. Check for signs of damage or wear. Decode the Lights: Look at your modem and router. Power light should be solid. Internet/WAN/DSL/Fibre light should be green, blue or white (not red). A blinking or red light on the ONT or Modem often means the issue is outside your home. Low WiFi Signal? Maybe your Modem needs to be moved. It's best to have your modem centrally located, off the floor, and away from thick walls, metal objects, and microwave ovens. Moving it even a few meters closer to your device can dramatically boost your Wi-Fi range. Using Mobile Broadband? Ensure your Mobile Broadband modem has good reception. Often placing them near a Window works best. (This is especially important for Mobile-based connections) Check with your ISP If all your equipment is powered up and appears that it should be working correctly, no changes have been made recently, then the fault is often likely with your Internet Service Provider or the lines that come to your property. Check for Local Outages: Use a mobile phone (via mobile data, not WiFi) to check with your internet provider such as Spark, Vodafone / One, Slingshot via their website or social media page. They usually have a status page or an automated message about local internet outages (like those caused by weather or maintenance). Call Them Up: If no outage is listed, it’s time to call. They can perform a "line test" to your property, which is the quickest way to confirm if the connection is failing before it reaches your modem. Advanced Fixes These steps are usually reserved for when the connection is slow or intermittently dropping, but worth trying even if your internet is down. If your Internet Provider says everything is okay on their side, it's best to check these before calling in a technician. Check for Malware: Run a quick scan with your antivirus software. Sometimes, a malicious program can secretly use up all your internet bandwidth. Clear Your DNS Cache: This is a simple, non-destructive fix that can sometimes resolve weird browsing issues. See the video below for how to do this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvkPShY8bUc Sometimes, a problem with a neighbourhood junction box or an ISP-level fault takes time to be acknowledged and fixed. If you've tried everything, giving it until the next morning is a good final step. If you're seeing persistent, unique issues even after all these steps, it might be a deeper hardware problem like a dying modem, a faulty Wi-Fi, or even bad router firmware. You may need to look into a replacement modem to resolve your issue, most ISP's will be able to supply one at a low cost. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: how to, internet connection, tech tips, wifi #### Keep a “Gadget Box” for all your important documents. Sometimes when we open that new gadget up, we rush to its electronic goodness and spend hours playing with it. But what happens to the rest of the documentation stored in that packaging? Make a habit of putting it all in a “Gadget Box”. A gadget box is an efficient and organized solution for storing receipts, invoices, warranties, and other important documents related to your gadgets. It can be made of various materials, including cardboard, plastic, or any other material that fits your needs. This physical storage solution provides a permanent home for your documents, ensuring that you can easily find them when you need them. Whenever you buy your new gadget, whether it be a new TV, Smartphone or even a keyboard and mouse, store your invoice and warranty paperwork in a safe place. Ideally purchase a filing box of some description or even use a spare drawer in the house to organize all of those important documents. This will save you from stressing out trying to find that all-important invoice when you might just need it more than ever. To make the most out of your gadget box, consider creating separate folders or envelopes for each gadget. Label each folder or envelope with the name of the gadget and the date of purchase, making it easier to identify and locate the relevant documents. Not to mention, it’s very useful for resale value if you still have the original documentation, and kind of cool to see just how long you’ve had your gadgets for and where you purchased them from. When a computer dies, the default instinct is often to head to a big box retailer and grab the cheapest brand new laptop off the shelf. It looks like a win for the budget on paper, but the reality of running cheap retail laptops in a demanding business environment tells a completely different financial story. The Illusion of "Cheap" New Laptops When you buy a brand new sub-$1000 laptop from a retail store, you are generally buying a consumer-grade, plastic machine. These devices are built to meet a price point, typically for light evening web browsing, paying bills, and watching Netflix. To keep the retail price low, manufacturers use these lower quality materials such as the plastic chassis, flimsy screen hinges, combined with lower quality motherboard componentry and basic cooling heatsink and fans. When subjected to 40-hour work weeks, constant screen opening, and running heavy cloud applications, these machines fail fast. Industry data consistently shows consumer laptops have a functional lifespan of just 1 to 2 years before mechanical failures like cracked hinges or burnt-out motherboards force a total replacement. What Does "Ex-Lease" Actually Mean? Ex-lease or refurbished business laptops are completely different beasts. These are top-tier machines from lines like the HP EliteBook, Dell Latitude, and Lenovo ThinkPad. They are originally purchased by large corporations or government departments for thousands of dollars under leasing agreements. These machines often feature magnesium alloy bodies, spill-resistant keyboards, and heavy-duty cooling systems designed to run complex software all day without overheating. For example, Lenovo ThinkPads undergo rigorous MIL-STD 810G testing, surviving mechanical shocks, high humidity, extreme temperatures, and heavy vibrations. Because they are built to strict enterprise standards, a high-quality refurbished business laptop easily delivers a 5 to 7 year lifespan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hazDhYq8YOo The Financial Breakdown for Your Business Let us look at the real numbers. Buying five new consumer laptops at $800 each costs $4,000 upfront. Within three years, you will likely need to replace all of them due to hardware failure or massive software slowdowns, bringing your total hardware cost to $8,000 over six years. Alternatively, outfitting your team with five premium refurbished laptops at $600 each costs just $3,000. Because these business-grade machines are built to last, they will often easily serve your team for five years or more. Your staff gets faster processors and more RAM for heavy multitasking, and your business gets a significantly lower Total Cost of Ownership. In the unlikely event one breaks, you're still net positive on your initial investment, and when it comes time to upgrade, they will likely still have a decent resale value you can recoup, due to being a more premium, and still fully functional device. The Environmental Reality in Aotearoa The cost of cheap, disposable tech is not just financial. Electronic waste is a massive, growing issue across the country. According to government data, New Zealand currently generates roughly 99,000 tonnes of e-waste every single year, and a staggering amount of this toxic material ends up in local landfills. By choosing refurbished laptops and desktop computers, your business actively pulls perfectly good, high-performance hardware out of the waste stream. It is a tangible, measurable way to lower your company's carbon footprint while simultaneously upgrading your office speed. Making the Sustainable Shift to Business Grade Upgrading your office IT does not require blowing your annual budget on brand new, low performing retail hardware. By shifting to high-quality ex-lease equipment, you secure enterprise-level performance, superior durability, and a much healthier bottom line. If you are ready to stop replacing broken plastic laptops and want to outfit your team with hardware that actually performs, reach out to our team. Contact our experts techs today, and we will tailor a reliable, cost-effective IT solution specifically for your business needs. - Categories: Benefits of Buying Refurbished - Tags: Business IT Solutions, Cheap Business Laptops, Dell Latitude NZ, E-Waste Reduction NZ, Ex-Lease Computers, HP EliteBook Ex-Lease, Lenovo ThinkPad Refurbished, Refurbished Laptops NZ, Refurbished vs New Laptop, Small Business IT Setup, Sustainable Tech NZ #### Pay off your order with Laybuy & PartPay! Are you looking to buy a refurbished computer and want to be running Windows 11? Or maybe you want to save money with a Windows 10 unit? We're always happy to supply you with a machine to run your preferred operating system. This article serves as a guide to provide you with some helpful advice before making your choice. Processor Requirements and Considerations Windows 11 is the latest operating system from Microsoft and comes with some fantastic new features and a sleek new user interface. However, Microsoft has stated that Windows 11 officially requires at least an 8th generation Intel processor or equivalent AMD processor (example, Intel Core i5 8400 or greater) with TPM 2.0 to be considered fully supported by Microsoft. These and newer generations of processors can be somewhat more expensive, with less availability on the refurbished market, especially when considering the price point we would typically like to offer our customers. If you're looking to purchase refurbished computers or cheap laptops, there are many factors to consider, such as your intended use case, security requirements, and budget. On any machine purchased you can select your preferred operating system from a list of compatible options, including Linux and we will load this on for you free of charge with all latest updates and drivers. Check the processor support list When you are purchasing a machine you can compare the processor to the this list of the officially supported Processors from Microsoft to see if the machine you're buying is fully supported for the official upgrade path. With Intel Processors, those that are at least 8th Generation are currently officially supported. If your computer or laptop has at least an 8th generation processor, you can enjoy Windows 11 as these units meet the requirements for the official installation and upgrade procedures. To make things easy, when browsing our website you simply can scroll down the product description and find the Processor (CPU) section, if the CPU is supported for Windows 11, you'll see "Officially Supported CPU for Windows 11" mentioned in the listing. You can also easily determine the generation of most Intel processors by the first digit in the model number. For example… Intel Core i5 8500 (the 8 represents 8th generation)Intel Core i7 1165G7 (the 11 represents 11th generation) Both above processors would be supported. An Intel Core i5 7600 for example would NOT be officially supported as the 7 represents 7th generation, or an i7 6600U would also NOT be supported as the 6 represents 6th generation, etc. Can I keep using Windows 10? When Windows 10 support ends, Microsoft states your PC will continue to work, only future updates and free technical support via phone, email etc from Microsoft is discontinued (Source: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/end-of-support). In a corporate environment this could cause uncertainty. However, most people in a home environment find Windows 10 computers are still very capable for general use and when paired with a decent virus scanner, especially for non-mission-critical applications such as general home use, studying, writing documents etc. These units can provide an affordable entrance to technology, and we believe it is much better to repurpose them to someone who needs an affordable computer, rather than sending perfectly good technology to landfill. We also have found there are many people who still prefer to use Windows 10, or have particular software applications, or hardware that demands it, such as large industrial printers, factory and automation equipment, CNC machines and other very expensive equipment that is still working perfectly, but requires a well running, good quality Windows 10 computer to operate, as it simply will not work on a different version. In these instances especially, a refurbished Windows 10 computer can be a fantastic solution to get more life out of the existing equipment or software. Ultimately every Operating System has a lifecycle, for example XP, and Windows 7 are no longer supported on any machine, although some people still do use these versions without issue for specific purposes even right through to this day, without ongoing support from Microsoft. Ultimately even if security became a concern due to not being updated while storing sensitive data, the machines could carry on life without being connected to the internet, or with other security solutions such as high quality Virus and Malware scanners to reduce or eliminate potential security risks. Our Focus on Sustainability We strongly believe in sustainability and making use of existing technology to reduce landfill and provide a greener future for NZ. The vast majority of refurbished machines, even those that are not officially supported for Windows 11 are still very useful, and these business grade machines were often designed to be much higher quality and better performing than your typical home consumer models. Since they were high spec at the time of purchase, many still perform just as well, if not better than other more modern, and even brand new home consumer grade units and make an ideal choice for people who want to save money, and still get a quality machine. We find the majority of our customers don't need the extra features like TPM based drive encryption, and find that when weighing up the cost difference, the performance benefits of going to a more modern processor are very insignificant for their use cases such as Internet Browsing, Study, Office work etc. Can you run Windows 11 on unsupported processors? There are several methods available online which enable technicians to install Windows 11 even on machines that do not have these fully supported processors to meet the official upgrade path requirements. Most of these methods simply bypass the requirement for one of these processors and allow you to force the install, and ignore the requirement, typically these computers will run sufficiently as long as the rest of the machine has driver software that allows the use of the systems functions under Windows 11. While we've not yet encountered any issues, and have seen many other computer stores selling these machines without the officially supported processors, we want to make sure you're aware of the potential issues that could arise in the future from running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. Nobody can guarantee or be sure of the long term support for future software updates etc as Microsoft mentioned they may stop delivering software updates for older processors in the future. We want you to be fully informed about your options so you can make the best decision for your needs. Driver and Software SupportIt's important to note that while it's possible to install and run Windows 11 currently on a computer that is not "officially supported" and have it run very well. Doing so may put you at some risk of experiencing compatibility issues in the future. Windows 11 uses a new driver model that requires up-to-date drivers from hardware manufacturers, and older hardware such as old Printers, Scanners or other devices you use may not have these updated drivers. For example, if you have a specific software or game that requires a TPM 2.0 module, you'll need to look at a more modern 8th generation onward processor that fully supports this, as you will not be able to utilize any of the features a TPM 2.0 module requires. For the vast majority of our customers, this is not required as it primarily is used for high end data encryption methods like BitLocker, which can still be used via other means if really necessary. Ultimately, the decision of which operating system you'd like to run is a personal choice. We also want to ensure that you understand the potential risks involved if your hardware is unsupported, since in the future of any event where you face compatibility issues, you may be unable to continue using or updating Windows 11 and may need to roll back to Windows 10, install other software or patches or even use a different Operating System such as Linux to get the most out of your PC. If you are wanting to minimize any risks on unsupported hardware, then Windows 10 or Linux may be a better option for you. We can load Windows 10 or Linux on any of our machines, you can simply select this option when purchasing, or let us know via email and we will install your chosen operating system at no cost before shipping. Alternatively you can opt to purchase any of our Officially Supported Windows 11 machines, with Windows 11 pre installed and tested.  What alternatives are available to Microsoft Windows? In this article, we'll break down each step and provide more details on what each type of plug looks like. Screen The video output on your computer is typically located at the back of the PC or the side of a laptop. The most common types of video cables are HDMI, VGA, and DVI. HDMI cables are the most popular because they offer high-quality audio and video. VGA cables are the most common legacy video connectors, and DVI cables offer better image quality than VGA. If your computer has a graphics card, especially for gaming PC's you will need to pay extra attention to the port layout at the back of the PC, as there may be two places you can connect your monitor, the most important thing to note is with a machine that has a graphics card, that you must connect the Screen to the ports on the Graphics Card its self, and not the ports for the integrated mainboard graphics. We have an article here about connecting your PC with a graphics card. Keyboard and Mouse The USB connector on your keyboard and mouse should plug into the available USB ports on your computer. These USB ports are typically rectangular and can be found on the front or back of the CPU. Make sure the USB connectors are securely connected to the computer. You can plug them into any of the free USB ports, there is no requirement for them to be in any specific USB port, as they are universal. Power The power cable should be plugged into the back of the unit. The cable should then be plugged into a nearby outlet ideally with a surge protector. Make sure the power cable is securely connected to both the computer and the outlet. Pay special attention to the power switch (if fitted) and ensure it is switched on. If you see a red coloured switch that requires the use of a tool to change, which often has writing indicating 110/240 volts, DO NOT touch this. This is the voltage selection switch and should only be changed by a professional if your computer is physically moved to another country with different power requirements. Ethernet The Ethernet port is typically located at the back of the unit. It's a rectangular port that looks similar to a phone jack, but slightly wider. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the modem or router and the other end into the Ethernet port on the computer. If you're using a WiFi connection, you will not require an ethernet cord. Simply click on the network icon in the taskbar and select the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. You can find out how to do this with our Step by Step WiFi connections article. Time to start your PC Once you've connected your computer to the screen, keyboard, mouse, power, and Ethernet, simply press the power button on the front of your machine. You should soon see your computer's desktop on your screen. If you encounter any issues during the setup process, check your connections, and make sure everything is plugged in correctly. Setting up your computer is a simple process that can be done by following these easy steps. By connecting your computer to a screen, keyboard, mouse, power, and Ethernet, you'll be able to access all of its features and capabilities. If you're still having trouble setting up your computer, don't hesitate to contact a professional or consult the manufacturer's website for support. With these tips, you'll be up and running in no time! - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: how to, plug in computer, setup guide, warranty guide #### The 2026 Parents Guide to BYOD Laptops, Why 'Ex-Lease' Beats Buying New If you are a Kiwi parent navigating the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) requirements for your child's school, you already know how expensive it can get. You walk into a big-box retail store, look at the $400 to $800 price range, and assume you are getting a decent deal. But here is the industry secret most retailers won't tell you... The cheap laptops sold on retail shelves are designed to hit a low price point, not to last. They are usually built with flimsy plastic hinges, slow "Celeron" or "Pentium" processors, and screens that crack at the slightest bump in a school backpack. So, how do you get a fast, durable laptop for your child without spending $1,500+? You use the ultimate NZ tech hack, Properly Refurbished, Premium Ex-Lease Business Laptops. At Hungry PC, we specialize in sourcing premium, corporate-grade laptops (like the HP EliteBook, Dell Latitude, and Lenovo ThinkPad) that have just come off their corporate leases. When these laptops are purchased brand new, they typically cost upwards of $2,000. Most business grade units were engineered with magnesium-alloy frames, spill-resistant keyboards, and high-end Intel Core i5 or even i7 processors, designed to survive the daily grind of traveling business executives who demand reliability and performance. By purchasing these units fully refurbished, you are getting a $2,000 spec build quality and performance, for the price of a cheap retail laptop. You're directly contributing to a more sustainable future, while saving yourself money, and usually enjoying a far better performing device. Retail Budget Laptop ($400-$800): Typically flimsy plastic, low specs, slow processor, lucky to last a single school year. Designed to fit a low price point, compromises in their build or part quality are often made to bake in some savings. Ex-Lease Business Laptop at similar price point: Premium build quality, usually metal/carbon-fiber reinforced chassis, 8GB to 16GB RAM, Intel Core i5/i7 processor, built to survive daily transport. Higher durability and security standards, designed for longer service life. The 3 Golden Rules for BYOD Specs in 2026 Before you buy anything this school term, make sure the laptop hits these three absolute minimum requirements: 8GB of RAM (Minimum we recommend for Windows 11)Do not buy a laptop for study with 4GB of RAM in 2026. Between running Microsoft Teams, multiple Google Chrome tabs, and school software, 4GB will cause the laptop to slow down and stutter. 8GB is the sweet spot, and 16GB or more is future-proof. 4GB is only suitable if you're buying a Chromebook. A Solid State Drive (SSD)Older hard drives (HDDs) are incredibly slow and break easily if the laptop is dropped. An SSD has no moving parts, meaning the laptop will boot up in seconds and survive the rough-and-tumble environment of a school bag. We ensure every laptop at Hungry PC is upgraded with a lightning-fast SSD. Windows 11 Compatibility - 8th Gen CPU MINIMUMSchools run on the Microsoft ecosystem. Ensure your child's laptop is fully capable of running Windows 11 smoothly with an 8th Generation (or greater) processor, so they don't face software compatibility issues. Beware of cheap laptops for sale in 2026 "running" Windows 11 with 6th or 7th Gen CPU's, they are not officially supported and may stop working in future due to workarounds used to install Windows 11 on the older hardware. Whether you need a reliable machine for school assignments, a capable daily driver for the home office, or a versatile convertible device for travel, the market for cheap laptops in NZ is easy to navigate when you have the right advice. Buying properly renewed hardware is the absolute smartest way to stretch your budget while securing the premium features you actually need for daily life, whilst enjoying a more premium device that has reliability baked in from the factory. Before diving into the top models for June 2026, it helps to know exactly what specifications matter most when shopping on a budget. What to Look for When Buying a Cheap Laptop Browsing through different laptop options and reading all the specifications can feel quite overwhelming. To ensure you get a machine that handles your daily routine without frustrating lag or constant crashing, keep these core hardware components in mind. Storage Speed Over Capacity A common mistake is buying a laptop with a massive but slow drive. Always look for a fast, quality branded Solid State Drive (SSD). An SSD is a hardware component that has no moving parts. This means your laptop will boot up in seconds, load applications instantly, and survive accidental bumps much better than older drives. Beware of cheaper drives on the market that advertise a huge storage capacity, at the expense of speed and reliability. The Right Amount of RAM Random Access Memory or RAM often dictates how many things your laptop can have open at once. If you are buying a Chromebook for basic schoolwork, 4GB is perfectly fine. For a Windows laptop where you plan to run Office applications, check emails, and browse the web, 8GB of RAM is the standard sweet spot. If you are a heavy user who keeps dozens of tabs open while running background software, aim for 16GB. Power users, gamers and video editors often can benefit from 32GB however this does increase the price dramatically, consider a 16GB model and look to upgrade in future if necessary. The Renewed Advantage Commercial-grade business laptops are built to last for years, featuring backlit keyboards, metal hinges, and robust chassis materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum etc. By choosing a renewed business laptop over a brand-new budget consumer laptop, you get vastly superior hardware build quality for the same, or less cost. These machines are rigorously tested, cleaned, and restored to full working order by our expert technicians. 🛡️ Not all refurbished tech is the same Experience our Difference » Popular Cheap Laptop Options for June 2026 Here are some of the best cheap laptop options, combining excellent quality hardware, modern operating systems, and solid everyday reliability for a value packed purchase. When it comes to finding a laptop or desktop PC that can play games, and power through CAD design, Architecture, Video Editing or Photoshop, a graphics card for your workstation or gaming PC is one of the most important parts that cannot be overlooked. The options can be overwhelming at times, today we will look into the range available from NVIDIA, a pioneer in the graphics card industry. NVIDIA offers a range of graphics cards catering to different needs. We'll explore the difference between three prominent series: Quadro, RTX, and GTX, shedding light on their unique features and purposes. For an optimal gaming experience, we highly recommend choosing a laptop or PC with a dedicated graphics card. Unlike integrated graphics, which share system memory with the CPU, a dedicated graphics card has its dedicated memory and processing power solely for graphics-related tasks. This means smoother gameplay, more FPS, better visuals, and the ability to run graphically demanding titles. NVIDIA Quadro Series: Ideal for CAD, Video Editing, Photography NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards are designed for professionals in fields such as content creation, 3D modeling, and CAD work. The Quadro series excels in delivering unmatched precision and reliability for demanding tasks like video editing, simulations, and rendering. These cards are optimized for stability, accuracy, and support for professional applications. NVIDIA RTX Series: Real-time Ray Tracing and Gaming Performance The RTX series represents a significant leap in graphics card technology, introducing real-time ray tracing capabilities. RTX cards are a top choice for gamers and content creators alike, as they bring cinematic-quality rendering to the gaming world. With features like AI-enhanced graphics and DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), RTX cards redefine visual fidelity in games and applications. NVIDIA GTX Series: A Solid Choice for Gaming The GTX series, while not as cutting-edge as the RTX line, remains a reliable choice for gaming enthusiasts. These cards provide excellent performance for gaming at 1080p and 1440p resolutions, offering a cost-effective option for those who prioritize smooth gameplay without the need for advanced features like ray tracing which are often not required to enjoy most games, with many games not even requiring this feature at all. Can Quadro Graphics Cards Play Games too? One common question among users is whether Quadro graphics cards can handle gaming. While Quadro cards are not specifically designed for gaming, many models are capable of running games smoothly and are an ideal, cost-effective choice especially in the refurbished market, as a way to get a cheap gaming laptop. Many games such as Minecraft, Fortnite, Roblox, GTA5, Apex Legends etc have no trouble running on many of the Quadro cards, and provide really decent framerates at low to medium settings in Full HD. Gaming-oriented RTX or GTX cards are always going to be better suited for gaming but often come at a higher price point, so it really does come down to what your budget allows and how often you are going to be gaming, and especially what level of performance (framerate, high settings etc) you are after. For a hardcore gamer that is only going to be using their machine to play games, who wants maximum framerates and performance, especially in high resolutions like 4K we would recommend choosing a GTX or RTX card when buying your next computer. To test this further, we benchmarked and compared two Lenovo Laptops. One which features a Quadro RTX 4000 4GB Graphics Card, and the other with a GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. We found a comfortable average FPS of 41.6 in Unigine Heaven Benchmark at high settings with the Quadro, which ends up being very similar in performance to a GTX 1050 Ti, which can easily play most games at low to medium settings in HD. Lenovo P53 Quadro RTX 4000 4GB Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme GTX 1050 Ti Ultimately, selecting the right NVIDIA graphics card depends on your specific requirements. If you're a professional in need of powerful rendering capabilities, the Quadro series is the go-to choice. For gamers who want cutting-edge features like ray tracing, the RTX series delivers an unparalleled experience. Meanwhile, the GTX series strikes a balance between performance and affordability, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious gamers, and a worthy consideration is always an affordable Quadro powered laptop or PC if you are a casual gamer. If you are in the market for refurbished laptops or notebooks we also have a fantastic article you can read here where we dive deeper into other specifications such as processor and RAM. One of the most crucial aspects to consider when purchasing your laptop is the screen size. It's not just about aesthetics as the screen size also determines the overall size and weight of the laptop, and can change how you interact with the laptop on a day to day basis. Whether you're a student, a business professional, creative artist, or a casual user there is not a "one size fits all" approach, as it mostly comes down to personal preferences, however we have found patterns in the market, and learned from years of experience which devices are most likely to suit peoples needs. So how are laptop screen sizes measured, and which sizes cater best to different user preferences and needs? How Laptop Screen Sizes Are Measured Laptop screen sizes are typically measured diagonally from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner, usually the bottom left to the top right. This measurement is expressed in inches and is universally used worldwide. The most common sizes are 12.5", 14", 15" and sometimes 17" While this provides a standard metric for comparison, it's important to note that the actual dimensions of the laptop itself can vary significantly based on factors like bezel thickness and aspect ratio. Popular Laptop Screen Sizes and Their Potential Suitability 12.5 Inch Screens and Under Who It's For: Mostly School Students, and Travelers on a space budget. Why: This size laptop is super portable, often very lightweight and easy to fit in a smaller bag, like a school bag or overhead luggage bag for international travelers. The main downside to this size is that typically the screen resolutions are often lower, in order to make sure that items on the screen do not appear too small. In this case you cannot fit so much on the screen at any one time, so you'll be scrolling more often when browsing the internet for example. 13 to 14 Inch Screens Who It's For: Professionals, Students, and Travelers Why: Laptops in this size strike almost a perfect balance between portability and usability. They are lightweight and compact, making them ideal for professionals who are always on the go or students who need to carry their laptops between classes. Additionally, the screen size is sufficient for productivity tasks such as document editing, web browsing, and light photo editing. They are a very popular choice, widely available in a huge range of different laptop models. 14" would be our preferred choice for an all-round portable, yet feature packed laptop purchase. 15.6 Inches Who It's For: Content Creators, Gamers, and Power Users Why: This size offers a larger canvas for content creation and even immersive gaming experiences. Content creators, such as graphic designers and video editors, benefit from the extra screen real estate for multitasking and detailed work. Gamers also appreciate the larger display for better visibility during gameplay. Moreover, power users who require robust performance for demanding tasks find these laptops accommodating. If you're a home or business user who predominantly has their laptop on a desk, and don't often travel with it, this would be our recommended size, as it offers a very good compromise between a laptop that you can take with you if you need to, and that of a fully functioning desktop computer system. 17 Inches and Above Who It's For: Desktop Replacements, CAD Design, and Entertainment Why: Laptops with screen sizes of 17 inches and above are often referred to as desktop replacements due to their substantial size and weight. They are popular among users who prioritize a large and immersive viewing experience for entertainment purposes, such as watching movies or streaming content. Additionally, professionals in fields like architecture or engineering may opt for these larger laptops for intensive design work. These types of laptops often come packed with very high specifications, more expansion and upgrade options, high end graphics cards etc, as manufacturers can easily pack more hardware inside them. Optimizing Your Laptop Screen Size Choice When choosing which laptop to buy, and when you are checking out the laptop screen sizes, consider your specific needs and usage patterns. Here are a few tips to help you make an informed decision: Portability vs. Productivity: Balance your need for portability with the desire for a larger screen. If you prioritize mobility, opt for a smaller screen size. However, if productivity or extended periods of use is paramount, consider a larger screen for enhanced multitasking capabilities. Resolution Matters: Higher resolution displays offer sharper images and text, regardless of screen size. Factor in resolution along with screen size to ensure a crisp and clear viewing experience. A Full HD (1920x1080) or even 4K resolution screen can be worth the extra investment if you really want an immersive display for movies or gaming. Consider the Specs: As manufacturers are always trying to perfect their designs, the laptop screen size often is intended to suit a particular target audience. When manufacturers are considering what size to build the laptop and which size screen to include, this often dictates if the machine will have extra capabilities such as a graphics card for CAD design or Gaming. While more portable 14" sized laptops often have larger capacity batteries to go along with their portability narrative. Ultimately understanding how laptop screen sizes are measured and their suitability for different user demographics can help you make an informed decision when purchasing a laptop. Whether you prioritize portability, productivity, or entertainment, there's a laptop out there to meet your needs. If you are in the market for a laptop but not sure what to choose, you can always consult with our expert team, and we find you the perfect solution to meet your needs. - Categories: Tech Tips and Setup Guides - Tags: screen sizes #### Your Ultimate Guide to Refurbished Laptops: Choosing the Right Processor, RAM, and Graphics for Your Needs If you are in the market for refurbished laptops or notebooks but feel overwhelmed by the jargon and technical specifications, we are here to help. Choosing the right laptop can be a daunting task, especially when you're faced with options like AMD, Ryzen and Intel Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors, various RAM sizes, and the choice between SSD and Hard Drive storage. Fear not! In this comprehensive guide, we'll break down these components in plain language to help you make an informed decision and find the perfect refurbished laptop that suits your needs. The Heart of the Machine: The Processor / CPU The processor, often referred to as the laptop's brain, is a critical factor that significantly affects its performance. Primarily we stock laptops with Dual Core, Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors made by Intel. Let's delve deeper into the differences between these: Pentium / Dual Core: Entry-level on a budget, these are the cheapest processors available and are good for casual use, people who are looking for their first laptop for the basics, learning how to use a computer etc. Although they are very affordable, they are not the most powerful so won't offer a great deal of speed. Core i3: These are the next step up entry-level processors which are suitable for all basic tasks like web browsing, emailing, and working with office applications. It's an excellent choice if your primary usage revolves around everyday computing without heavy multitasking or demanding applications. Core i5: Positioned as the middle ground, Core i5 processors offer a balanced mix of performance and power efficiency. They are well-suited for everyday tasks, including multimedia consumption, light gaming, and multitasking. If you want a laptop that can handle various applications smoothly and provide a responsive experience, a Core i5 processor is a solid choice. Core i7: Designed for power users, graphics designers, gamers, and professionals, Core i7 processors pack a punch in terms of performance. These laptops are capable of handling resource-intensive tasks such as video and photo editing with ease. If your needs demand top-tier performance and you plan to tackle demanding applications, a laptop with a Core i7 processor is the way to go. RAM: The Multitasking Marvel RAM (Random Access Memory) serves as the laptop's short-term memory and plays a crucial role in multitasking and overall performance. Understanding the RAM options available is essential: 4GB RAM: This amount of RAM is suitable for basic tasks and light multitasking. If your laptop usage primarily involves web browsing, working with office applications, and occasional media consumption, 4GB should suffice. 8GB RAM: Often considered the sweet spot for most users, 8GB of RAM provides a seamless multitasking experience. It can handle moderate gaming, run multiple applications concurrently, and ensure smooth performance across a wide range of tasks. 16GB+ RAM: For those who just want more speed, power users, content creators, and gamers, can all truly benefit from laptops with 16GB or more. This larger memory ensures smooth operation when dealing with large files, heavy multitasking, lots of tabs, and resource-intensive applications. If your work or hobbies demand high performance, consider a laptop with 16GB or more RAM for a premium computing experience. Gaming Considerations: The Importance of a Dedicated Graphics Card If your laptop usage extends to gaming, there's an additional crucial factor to consider: the graphics card, also known as the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). For an optimal gaming experience, we highly recommend choosing a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. Unlike integrated graphics, which share system memory with the CPU, a dedicated graphics card has its dedicated memory and processing power solely for graphics-related tasks. This means smoother gameplay, more FPS, better visuals, and the ability to run graphically demanding titles. When selecting a laptop for gaming, it's essential to check the specifications carefully, especially if you plan to play specific games. Not all laptops are suitable for gaming without the appropriate graphics card. Here's how you can ensure compatibility: Check Game Requirements: Each game has its system requirements listed on its official website or platform (e.g., Steam). Pay attention to the recommended and minimum requirements. These often include details about the required CPU, RAM, and, most importantly, the GPU. Compare with Our Products: If you're browsing our selection of refurbished laptops, be sure to compare the specifications of the laptops you're interested in with the game's requirements. Look for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card that meets or exceeds the game's recommended GPU. With this deeper understanding of the differences in performance between processors and other components that build up the foundations of your laptop or notebook, you can make an informed decision that meets your needs and budget. Remember, a laptop's performance and enjoyment depends on more than just its specification, so consider other factors like screen size, and build quality which are important to ensure you find the perfect laptop, and enhance your computing experience. At Hungry PC we source quality, ex-lease business grade tech, not just old e-waste! Every unit is individually tested and cleaned, inside and out, with worn components replaced or upgraded as necessary to bring these systems a new lease on life. Used tech devices require a high level of professional servicing to ensure longevity and give you the best value possible. Our expert technicians with over 15 years experience place an extensive QA process to ensure the physical hardware is operating effectively as close to new as it can be. Often due to our processes, the upgrades we fit to these desktop and tower PCs make them function better than when they were brand new. Why risk the problems of a completely unknown condition, pre-owned device that has never been serviced? You get much better value, longevity and certainty from a properly refurbished device. Not all refurbished tech is the same, experience our difference and see how we grade our systems here What condition are your refurbished laptops in? Every laptop we stock has been restored, tested and renewed to A Grade quality before they are offered for sale (unless otherwise stated). Any faults or major cosmetic damages are listed and specifically noted on each product description where necessary, and are sold at a discounted rate as a lower grade option for those who wish to save some more money. Can you install Linux or other Operating System Versions? Yes! Your choice of Operating System version or distribution is installed fresh with latest Security Updates and Drivers. We can load Linux at no extra cost with your order! Simply select your preferred option from the Accessories / Upgrades section and we'll ensure your machine is fully loaded with your ideal Operating System choice. Please note: This free service will add a little extra time to process your order. As Linux is a community supported operating system, driver/software support for Linux is at your own risk. Do cheap refurbished laptops still have a Warranty? Yes! All our laptops are covered by an industry leading return-to-base hardware warranty. In the very rare instance there was a problem with your laptop, we're here to help. Read Warranty details here. Get discounted repairs for life! With our commitment to sustainability, we are the first in NZ to offer our repair discount program. Simply by purchasing your laptop from Hungry PC you’ll be eligible to receive 50% off our labour charges for any servicing or repairs to this device for 2 Years. This program rewards our loyal customers the benefit of cheaper laptop repairs on any out of Warranty services required including accidental damage to the screen, etc. Extend your warranty with us and we increase this discount program for the usable lifetime of the device. How long does the laptop battery run for? Each laptop comes with a used battery that will still hold a charge and has been tested to last at least one hour or more during full-load stress testing. The vast majority of our laptops offer a very reasonable battery life and under normal use they often will last significantly longer than when they are undergoing a full-load stress test. Battery Health Definition Tested OK / Fair - Battery holds a charge and passes our full-load stress test for at least one hour, likely to last longer but has not been tested any further.Good - Will easily play a full HD YouTube or Netflix Movie at Normal Brightness for 2 hours or more. During less intensive tasks like Word Processing they are likely to last longer.Excellent - Battery would typically last at least 3-4 hours of playing non-stop YouTube or Netflix movies back-to-back, and likely to last significantly longer during normal use such as web browsing.Brand New - Battery has been replaced with a brand new one to offer its full capacity. Due to their nature, battery life varies significantly between each unit we have in stock. We also test each laptop to perform flawlessly when connected to the power. Laptops do not require the battery to be charged whilst plugged in to the charger and can be used all day while plugged in. The power is in your hands! Choose to save money with the used battery, or if a longer battery life is required, we can supply a new battery replacement with free installation. Since used batteries are a consumable like printer ink or car tires, they are not covered by warranty. If you do require an extra long battery life, simply add the new battery option with your purchase. Beware of the "Battery Health Percentage" Myth. With years of experience in the industry, we've seen countless laptops with dead batteries that report an 80% health rating (or even more) via software tools. This is often a very unreliable way of testing a battery and during our customized testing procedure, they often won't even last ten minutes, fail our tests, and are then replaced. While others rely solely on this health rating to sell you a laptop, we instead decided to create this far more accurate test, so our customers can get a much better understanding of the battery condition and make an informed decision. We have had many customers return to us and buy computers years after their first purchase, as they were impressed with the reliability and want to upgrade to their next, newer, fancier and faster machine. Chromebook vs Windows: Which cheap laptop is right for me? Choosing the right cheap laptop comes down to how you plan to use it. Chromebooks run on Google's lightweight operating system and rely heavily on the cloud, making them a solid choice if your daily routine is limited to web browsing, streaming, checking emails, and writing documents online. They start up quickly and are highly secure, with great battery life, but they cannot run standard Microsoft Windows software or handle heavy offline workloads. They are however ideal for school students and many BYOD schools specifically ask for them. In an education environment they offer an extremely affordable computing experience for students who do not need the extra capabilities of a Windows laptop. Windows laptops offer complete freedom and flexibility, allowing you to install any traditional desktop software from Microsoft Office to specialized school or business applications. While a brand-new cheap laptop running Windows can sometimes feel slow, choosing a high-quality Windows based refurbished laptop gives you premium business-grade performance and robust multitasking for the same low price. Don't settle for "refurbished"... experience actually refurbished.Hand-crafted by Kiwis, for Kiwis. Sustainable tech with quality second to none. HungryPC Certified Renewed ✅ Quality, working devices sourced typically at the end of business leases from managed environments. Rather than salvaging faulty devices for refurbishment, we focus on renewing high grade devices through comprehensive cleaning, 48 Hour QA testing and upgrading to give these devices a true new lease on life. You’ll benefit from superior longevity and performance than that of most other used devices. Other Pre-Owned or “Refurbished” 🤔 Generally refers to a product that was previously owned and operated, then resold second-hand. There is no guarantee a used device was ever serviced, inspected or tested internally, or that all of it’s functions are working optimally as there are no official standards for refurbishment. Often lacking any future-proofing due to lower specs, or unseen issues such as dust and debris blocking cooling systems. Other Ex-Lease or Off Lease 🏢 These devices typically were used by a corporate business customer for 3-5 years and then returned at the end of their lease period for replacement with newer models, as businesses are on a routine replacement cycle for their IT Assets. Often these devices are resold ‘raw’ or as-is for enthusiasts or technicians to refurbish, test and upgrade as they see fit. You wouldn't buy a car that wasn't serviced, so why risk it with your tech? Delivering you the best quality Laptop or PC, with the best possible performance, and premium support is our core focus. You get much better value, longevity and certainty from an HPC Certified Renewed device. Benefit from up to 70% off the cost of when they're new, whilst being backed by warranty, and friendly, real, human support, for your peace of mind. Hungry PC are the leaders in providing you more sustainable tech solutions that last. Don't settle for other pre-owned devices that haven't been serviced. We ensure your device is dependable and running just like it was new, if not better, due to our intricate QA processes, 48 hour stress-tests and upgrade procedures. What to look out for when buying Refurbished or Pre-Owned After decades of experience in the IT repair industry, we have seen that a majority of the "refurbished" or "pre-owned" tech out there is just second-hand e-waste that's had a factory reset to re-install the operating system and then sent out the door to unsuspecting buyers, often without even physically cleaning the device or any in depth testing. We’ve seen countless devices that were clearly sourced from insurance write-offs with repairs attempted after liquid spills, or parallel imported, low-spec e-waste from other countries resold here for crazy low prices, leaving you with the risk of a very poor quality device, that may look okay from the outside, but contain undiscovered faults, missing functionality or even software in the wrong language. We believe you deserve better value. Example of a competitors product where the internals are full of dust, clearly never even opened or inspected. Why risk overheating, poor performance, and likely a far lower lifespan than that of an actually refurbished device? Get the Hungry PC Advantage We focus on supporting local businesses, and have partnered with suppliers that primarily source Laptops and PC’s within New Zealand that have come off-lease from professional environments, these are the kinds of devices that have been taken care of throughout their life by a dedicated IT team, often they’re kept to a very high standard, and well maintained and cleaned throughout their life. This means we offer you higher-calibre devices from the get-go as they’re not sourced from dubious places. Hungry PC Advantage - Cleaned, Tested, Fully Loaded, Ready to Go. Upgraded for a new lease on life, this unit performs better than when it was new. Each device is individually taken care of by our in-house technicians, throughout our intricate QA procedures they have been fully inspected, cleaned, and tested inside and out. This means that any dust or debris inside the unit that would affect cooling or performance have been removed. A full hardware stress test with our multi point testing system ensures that every core function of the laptop or PC is tested, and that everything is operating at it's best with the correct software and drivers loaded, so that you can get up and running from the moment you take the machine out of the box. From there, we are able to grade the machine’s condition, note and attend to any issues, or opportunities we find to upgrade the units where necessary, to give our customers the best possible value for money. Shopping around? 5 Questions to ask before buying a Laptop or PC in NZ Does it come with an authentic, NZ/AUS electrically certified charger? Many cheap laptops are imported from outside NZ as e-waste and come with dangerous aftermarket knock-off chargers, or worse, cheap travel adapters. We guarantee every laptop comes with an electrically compliant, safe power supply. This not only protects your safety, but it protects the longevity of the device from bad power input. Has it been physically opened and thermally serviced?A wipe and fresh software reinstall doesn't clean out years of dust. If a laptop or PC hasn't been physically opened, the cooling fans are likely blocked, leading to overheating and a shortened lifespan. Every HPC Certified Renewed device is opened, deep-cleaned, and thermally optimized by us right here in the Waikato. Will it officially support Windows 11?Many "bargain" refurbished devices online have older 6th or 7th Generation processors that require technicians to bypass the system requirements for installation. Microsoft officially requires at least an 8th Generation Intel processor to run Windows 11. We clearly label our devices, so you know you are getting a machine that is truly compatible. With a truly compatible device, you benefit from future updates, without install headaches or sudden loss of functionality. Has functionality been individually verified?Bulk sellers often only focus on if the device turns on before pushing it out the door. That is how you end up with a device that has unknown faults with keyboard keys, noisy fans, dead USB ports, corrupt Memory, or a flat CMOS that forgets settings every time you restart. We utilize a comprehensive multi-point diagnostic process and functional stress test to individually test every port, key, camera, and hidden component so it works exactly as it should. Was the battery physically stress-tested, or just given a quick 'software' check?Software battery health percentages are notoriously misleading. A battery might report "80% health" but completely shut down after 10 minutes of actual use. We don't rely on diagnostic guesses. We put our batteries through a minimum one-hour physical, real world load test to ensure they will actually hold a charge when you need them to. Not just playing video or showing a webpage, actually utilizing the hardware to its full capability. What is the difference between grades? On each individual product page, you can find the grading of your next device, we implement a ‘fussy’ grading structure, where often our B grades are even better than what most would expect, we aim to be as transparent as possible to give you the best indication of what you will receive. Be sure to read the condition description, as any important details will be listed for your reference with each unit being individually graded. A Grade: Units are preloved, with the highest level of cosmetic condition on offer, and perfect functionality. Often praised for their appearance, our A Grade refurbished devices are some of the best looking devices on the market. These devices are hand picked by us to find the best of the bunch. As they've been previously used, they may have some light cosmetic wear when closely inspected such as minor marks/scratches or sometimes small blemishes on outer edges or lids, however the wear on these units is very minimal for their age, specs, and typically what you’d find from very well taken care of devices, from clean, tidy business environments. These devices perform and function extremely well and we found them to have no notable issues during inspection. Check out hundreds of 5-Star reviews from our valued customers here. A- Grade: Perfect functionality, discounted for cosmetic imperfections. These units are in perfect working condition, and offered at a discounted price as they may have more visible cosmetic blemishes, or overall slightly more wear and tear from previous use such as marks, scratches, dings, rub marks or scuffs on screens, lids etc. These often small imperfections are purely cosmetic and do not effect their use, they are still fantastic devices, and offer a cheaper alternative for those who don't mind some mild wear and tear. Read the condition description on the product page for any further notes. B Grade: Great cost cutting option for those who aren’t worried about cosmetic appearances, or don’t mind a minor fault that wouldn't effect how they would use the device. We list these so you can get a still very useful unit, at a much lower price than if they were a higher grade. These units may have significant cosmetic defects, such as cracked plastic or a fault with some aspect of their functionality. We always note exactly what the fault is, so you can decide if it’s a deal breaker, or something that won’t bother you. C Grade: Sorry, we don’t sell ‘em! These are units that have functionality or cosmetic issues that we deem to be unacceptable, where your day-to-day use, or enjoyment of the product would be significantly impacted. We often see these listed as B Grade by other vendors, however if we end up with units like these, we recycle them to recover any useful spare parts. Our Enterprise-Grade Refurbishment Process At Hungry PC, we don't just wipe and ship. We specialize in high-quality, ex-lease business-grade technology. Every single machine goes through a rigorous, standardized 48-Hour Multi-Point QA Procedure in-house at our Hamilton workshop. Our transparent process ensures absolute consistency, traceability, and premium performance for every customer. 1. Sourcing & Secure Asset Processing Business-Grade Selection: We source robust, corporate-grade hardware designed for longevity, outperforming cheap consumer-grade electronics. Asset Tracking: Every unit is individually logged into our inventory system for complete traceability throughout our entire QA process. Secure Data Erasure: All previous storage drives undergo professional-standard, secure data wiping to guarantee absolute privacy, security and compliance, leaving no trace of a previous life. 2. Intricate Diagnostics & Fault Testing Hardware Verification: We perform a comprehensive internal inspection to validate exact hardware specifications and component health. Component Stress-Testing: The CPU, RAM, SSD and motherboard all undergo intensive diagnostic tests to guarantee zero technical faults. Transparent Battery Health Validation: We reject the "software battery health" myth. Instead, every laptop battery undergoes a physical full-load stress test to ensure and grade its reliable, real-world performance. 3. Physical Restoration & Thermal Optimization Deep Cleaning: Robust internal dust removal and external sanitization are performed to ensure optimal thermal cooling and peak performance. Strict Cosmetic Grading: Machines are restored and graded. We hold a strict standard, ensuring our primary stock meets overall an Very Good cosmetic condition. 4. Custom Upgrades & Software Provisioning Performance Upgrades: Where necessary, worn components are replaced. We frequently install brand new Solid State Drives (SSDs) and upgrade RAM to give machines a new lease on life. Genuine OS Licensing: Fresh, clean installations of the latest Operating Systems (such as Windows 11) with all current security updates and drivers. Ready-to-Go Software Suite: Systems are preloaded with essential software (Google Chrome, Zoom, VLC, PDF Reader, Antivirus, and LibreOffice) so you can get to work right out of the box. 5. Sustainability & Post-Sale Support Environmental Impact: By comprehensively renewing these devices, we actively prevent e-waste and reduce carbon emissions compared to manufacturing new computers. The Hungry PC Guarantee: Every system is backed by our comprehensive hardware warranty, lifetime access to our NZ tech support guides, and our industry-first 2-Year Repair Discount program (50% off labour for out-of-warranty services). Battery Condition Each laptop comes with a used battery that will still hold a charge and has been tested to last at least one hour or more during full-load stress testing. A note on Windows 11 Compatibility Intel Processors that are at least 8th Generation are currently officially supported to run Windows 11. If your computer or laptop has at least an 8th generation processor, you can enjoy Windows 11 as these units meet the requirements for the official installation and upgrade procedures. When you are looking for a Windows 11 Laptop or PC, be sure to check if the machine is officially supported, on our product description you can see if the Processor is listed as having official support. When you are looking at a machine elsewhere you can compare the processor to the this list of the officially supported Processors from Microsoft to see if the machine you're buying is fully supported for the official upgrade path. While it is possible to bypass the requirements and run Windows 11 on many ‘unsupported’ devices that do not have 8th generation processors, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the risks of doing so, as you may experience compatibility issues or the inability to install future updates. Read our article, with everything you need to know about Windows 10 and Windows 11 What are screen Rub Marks? Most sellers won’t even mention these, but if we find any significant blemishes, we offer these as A- or B Grade options, discounted depending on the severity. Modern and slim laptops are very susceptible to this phenomenon after some use, as due to their portable design, the keyboard will touch the screen when the lid is closed, and can slowly create small blemishes on the screen, such as imprint/rub marks due to the physical contact. These typically won’t effect use and often aren’t even visible unless the screen is off, or you have a solid background displaying, such as a bright, white blank page. See the photos below of what this can look like… Hungry PC Certified Refurbished, Full Warranty Support. When operating on a strict budget, focus on quality and essential hardware components to maximize speed and durability. Difference Between Refurbished, Pre-Owned and Ex-Lease HungryPC Certified Renewed ✅ Quality, working devices sourced typically at the end of business leases from managed environments. Rather than salvaging faulty devices for refurbishment, we focus on renewing high grade devices through comprehensive cleaning, 48 Hour QA testing and upgrading to give these devices a true new lease on life. CPU Generations: Don't Judge a Chip by its Name In the world of ex-lease and refurbished machines, especially running Windows 11, the processor's generation matters. Windows 11 requires at least 8th Generation to be fully compatible. Business Grade Advantage: Our refurbished stock is usually comprised of business-grade units (Dell OptiPlex, Latitude, HP EliteDesk, ProBook, Lenovo ThinlCenter, ThinkPad). These models are built with far superior internal components and chassis materials than standard consumer devices, offering unparalleled durability. Focus on Modern Models: Look for Intel processors that are 8th Generation or newer (e.g. Intel Core i5 8250u). These generations often include better integrated graphics and power management, which significantly boost everyday performance. RAM: The more you open, the more you need Random Access Memory (RAM) is where your computer stores information for current tasks (browsing, streaming, working on documents). If you run out of RAM, your computer can grind to a halt. Multitasking Standard: For anything other than Chromebook's 4GB of RAM will struggle with modern web browsing and running more than one application. Aim for 8GB to 16GB of RAM to ensure a smooth, frustration-free experience for studying, streaming, and essential work tasks. Future-Proofing: While 16GB or more is ideal, an 8GB unit still provides sufficient headroom for current operating system requirements and general day-to-day usage. If you want a machine that is more future-proof or when opening multiple applications / browser tabs at the same time, consider a unit with at least 16GB RAM. Non-Negotiable: The Speed and Power of the SSD The single most critical factor for a fast and enjoyable user experience is the hard drive type. When shopping for a cheap computer, you must insist on a QUALITY Solid State Drive (SSD). Our Recommendation: 128GB is really too small for most people, as Windows its self will take up a large majority of this. 256GB SSD is okay for basic use, especially if you don't have a lot of Photos or Videos, and can make for a good low-cost option. If you want to store lots of data, especially Photos and Videos we recommend 512GB to 1TB. You can also always use external storage to offload any files you don't frequently use to save some space and $$. Speed Over Size: Even an older computer with a better quality, fast SSD will feel much smoother for daily tasks (booting up, opening browser tabs, loading apps) than a newer machine with a slower drive. Durability: SSDs have no moving parts, making them far more reliable and resistant to drops or bumps. A significant advantage for travel and portability. Quality: An over-used or low-quality SSD will be prone to very slow read and write speeds, or worse yet, complete failure. We only install drives from leading brands (not cheap imitations) which are then individually tested for health and performance to ensure better longevity, and value for money. The Hungry PC Advantage: Don't settle for less Confidence is key when investing your money in buying a laptop or PC.
